Jacques and Berthe Lipchitz is the title of a 1916 oil on canvas painting by Italian Figurative artist Amedeo Modigliani. The work was completed during Modigliani’s alcohol and drug fuelled final years as symptoms of his chronic tuberculosis became increasingly apparent. The subjects of the painting are Modigliani’s friend, the Lithuanian Cubist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, and his wife, the Russian poet Berthe Kitrosser, and the work exemplified the sculpture like elongation of face and form that dominated so much of the Italian artists work during this period.
