Canaletto Leads The Charge At Old Masters Sale
Auction house Sotheby’s held their Old Masters Week auctions last week and late-Venetian School painter Giovanni Antonio Canal, otherwise known as Canaletto, lead the charge with one his oil paintings fetching the top price when it went under the hammer. The Old Masters Week auctions were split up into the Old Master Drawings Sale which was held on Wednesday 25th January, and the Important Old Master Paintings & Sculpture which took place on Thursday 26th January at the companies auction rooms in New York.

An exhibition that features artwork by Venetian master Giovanni Antonio Canal is due to finish soon at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers Univeristy in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The show titled Two Venetian Masters: Canaletto And Domenico Tiepolo Etchings from the Arthur Ross Foundation presents work from a lesser-known side of the Italian’s oeuvre. Mostly renowned for his vedute oil paintings of Venetian waterways, the etchings reveal the role that print making played in the artist’s career.
