Cézanne Painting Becomes World’s Most Expensive

Rumours abounded in the art world last year that the Paul Cézanne oil painting The Card Players had been sold for around $250 million. The oil on canvas work is part of a series of five that the French post-Impressionist created during his Final Period in Provence between 1890 and 1895. The other four oil paintings in the Card Players Series and each of the paintings in the series depicts Provençal peasants seated at a table, smoking and playing cards.

The final period in the career and life of French post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne saw the artist return to his hometown of Aix-en-Provence in the south of France. The year was 1890 and Cézanne was beset by personal problems through both his often-stormy relationship with his wife Hortense, and through the onset of severe diabetes and the destabilising influence it would have on his temperamental personality. For most of the last decade of his life between 1896 and 1906 Cézanne worked in isolation and he became increasingly preoccupied with death and his own mortality.
