Dalí The False Prophet
One of the most poignant and powerful paintings about the Spanish Civil War is Pablo Picasso’s 1937 oil on canvas masterpiece Guernica. Picasso created the work in response to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica in Spain by the German and Italian warplanes; a bombing that had been orchestrated by the Spanish Nationalist forces. Picasso’s oil painting was displayed on a round the world tour, going on to become a famous and widely acclaimed anti-war symbol, helping to bring the tragedies of the Spanish Civil War to the attention of the world. However Picasso wasn’t the only Spanish artist to create a work inspired by the conflict.
Dalí Museum Celebrates One-Year Anniversary
Last Wednesday 10th January the Salvador Dalí Museum in St Petersburg, Florida, celebrated its first birthday with a day filled with Dalí themed events as well as with announcements of upcoming exhibitions to be hosted at the waterfront gallery. The museum houses more than 1,000 pieces of work by the Spanish Surrealist including oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, graphics, photographs, sculptures, objets d’art as well as an extensive archival library, comprising the largest collection of his artwork to be held outside of Europe.
