ARTifacts - Fun facts about Edgar Degas
The Bellelli Family
The Bellelli Family, sometimes known as Family Portrait, is an Edgar Degas oil painting that was created between 1858 and 1867 and which is generally regarded as being one of the master works of the French Impressionist’s youth. The painting is currently housed at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and Degas is thought to have begun work on the group portrait when he was just 24 years of age, staying at the home of his aunt in Florence.
Degas In The South
We often seem to mention the effects of the Franco-Prussian war in our posts about each of the Impressionists and the Impressionist Movement as a whole. The conflict that lasted from July of 1870 until May of 1871 resulted in Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro leaving France for the safety of London, with both spending their time there studying the works of John Constable and J.M.W. Turner, and with Pissarro leaving behind what would later be termed ‘the blueprints of Impressionism’, the vast majority of which were eventually destroyed by soldiers during the war. It resulted in Paul Cézanne fleeing from military conscription and hiding out in the village of l’Estaque near Marseille in the south of France, which was the start of his creative association with the region. It delayed Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s rise to fame by around ten years and resulted in Alfred Sisley spending most of the rest of his life in poverty.
