Wassily Kandinsky’s route to becoming an artist was little less conventional than that of most of his contemporaries, and as a result it wasn’t until slightly later in his life that the Russian Expressionist and Abstractionist became fully established as a force in early-20th Century European art. Kandinsky didn't grow up in a particularly artistic environment, he didn’t enrol in an art school or an art academy in his youth and as a result the earliest work in his oeuvre only stems from after he was in his 30s. Much like French post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin, Kandinsky worked in a number of different fields before finally arriving at painting as his chosen profession – in this post we’re going to take a closer look at Kandinsky’s slightly unusual route to art school.

In 1921 Wassily Kandinsky was invited to attend the Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. The invitation came from Walter Gropius, a German architect who became a pioneering master of modern architectural design and the founder of the Bauhaus school. The school had only been operating since 1919 and was innovative in its approach at combining crafts, fine arts and architecture and went on to have a profound influence on the development of Modernist art, architecture, graphic design, industrial design, interior design and typography.
