Forgotten Klimt Re-emerges

A painting by Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt, which hasn't actually been seen in public in 110 years, is due to go up for auction this coming week. The oil painting in question, Seeufer Mit Birken (Lakeshore With Branches), has been missing since 1902 and was unveiled by auctioneers Sotheby’s at the firm’s New Bond Street headquarters in London on February 2nd for the first time in over a century. The work is expected to headline Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art auction that has been scheduled on February 8th, and other work that will also go under the hammer at the sale includes work by Joan Miró, Claude Monet, Fernand Léger, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, Yves Tanguy and René Magritte, as well as a group of paintings by German artists including Max Ernst, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Lyonel Feininger and Otto Dix.
