At 18 he went to Paris to study law and in 1889, after a bout of appendicitis during which time his mother brought him painting supplies to keep him occupied, he began to paint.

Matisse’s Dark Period

A glimpse through the oeuvre of Henri Matisse may make it difficult for some to imagine that he ever had a Dark Period. Whether he was using Fauvism, Modernism or Impressionism, his work displayed a mastery of expressive colour and drawing, often utilising bright and vivid hues to bring his oil paintings to life. However, between late-1901 and 1903, Matisse experienced a period of personal hardship in his life that was reflected in some of the paintings that he produced. We’re going to take a closer look at one of the most famous works to stem from Matisse’s Dark Period, Notre-Dame, Une Fin d’Aprés-Midi (A Glimpse of Notre-Dame in the Late Afternoon), which was created by him in 1902, and the circumstances surrounding this low point in his personal life.

The Work Matisse Called His “Masterpiece”

The title of this post may have you guessing at which of his many works of art the Frenchman was referring to. Matisse was after all a master of many mediums, working not only in oil paints but also in watercolours, drawings, prints, sculptures, cut-outs and in his final work of art, stained glass. If your guess was the painting The Dance (1909), the Back Series bronze sculptures (1909-1930) or perhaps his cut-out book Jazz (1947), you’re dead wrong. Despite never having been a particularly religious man, the work that Matisse himself described as his “masterpiece” is in fact a chapel located in the town of Vence on the French Riviera.
