The Museum That Diego Built
For fans of the artwork of Diego Rivera, a visit to Mexico City may involve a trip to the Casa Azul, more commonly known as the Frida Kahlo Museum, in which some of Rivera’s paintings are displayed alongside those of his wife in the house in which she was born and brought up. Or perhaps it will involve a trip to the nearby Diego Rivera House and Study Museum, the Museo Dolores Olmedo, or indeed any one of the numerous public institutions dotted throughout the sprawling metropolis in which work by the Mexican Muralist is on display.
Relocating Pan-American Unity
Marriage of the Artistic Expression of the North and the South of this Continent, otherwise known as Pan-American Unity, is one of Mexican Muralist Diego Rivera’s greatest art works, but unfortunately also one of his least well known. The mural was commissioned by architect Timothy Pflueger to be created during the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition that was held on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. The exposition was being held to celebrate the openings of the Golden Gate and Oakland Bay bridges, which had been completed in 1937 and 1936 respectively. Pflueger had been a prominent architect in the establishment of Art Deco in California and the idea behind his commissioning Rivera was that he wanted the San Francisco public to witness “art in action”.
