Van Gogh Up Close

A new exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art plans to examine Dutch post-Impressionist Vincent van Gogh’s relationship with nature, focusing on how he was able to closely examine and reinterpret his surroundings, utilising the then-revolutionary technique of combining close and distant perspectives in the same painting. The show titled Van Gogh Up Close will be on display until May 6th and will feature 45 van Gogh oil paintings and 27 related prints and photographs, arranged across 10 galleries. Rather than delve into the more lurid detail of van Gogh’s personal life, in which he was routinely called a mad man in the towns and villages in which he stayed, in which he may or may not have chopped off part of his own ear and in which he himself said, “I felt my own disease very deep within me”, the ‘Up Close’ in show’s title refers to van Gogh’s own approach to painting natural landscapes and environments.
